Hearing and Creating at Hickory Museum of Art with Lenoir-Rhyne University (All Ages!)

The Chroma Collective combines music and art in a way that is engaging and fun for our audiences. They promote historically marginalized composers in our performances, and design their program so that audience members find the artist within themselves.
In collaboration with Lenoir-Rhyne University, we proudly present the Chroma Collective live in concert in the Coe Gallery of Hickory Museum of Art. Artist Michael C. Thorpe will be attendance as well, creating with the community. Chroma Collective will present an hour-long interactive concert, and audience members will have the opportunity to respond in real time to the music, tapping into their artist within. All ages are welcome to attend this free event.
Play & Paint A Basketball with Artist, Michael C. Thorpe
Join us at Ridgeview Recreation Center for a fun-filled event where you can play basketball with Michael C. Thorpe, and then paint a basketball! Food will be provided, and your painted basketball will be featured in Michael’s exhibition, "Michael C. Thorpe: No Expectations," at Hickory Museum of Art.
Teen Drawing Workshop (Ages 10 & Up)
$15; $10 Members
Is your pre-teen or teen curious about drawing? On the last Monday of each month, ages 10 and up have the opportunity to learn and practice simple drawing techniques. Our Drawing Workshop offers a friendly, casual environment to inspire creativity while improving illustration skills. Bring a sketchbook and each month we will focus on a different drawing technique, subject, or theme. Sign up for one or all! Classes run from September to May.

Young children and their favorite grown-up are introduced to art, the Museum and visual literacy in this monthly artful class. Each class features a gallery visit, story or game and lots of art making. New themes each month. Fee covers both classes in the month. Classes run September through May.

Exciting changes are coming for the 2024/2025 Homeschool Year!
Homeschool will now be held on the first and third Monday of each month from September 2024 to May 2025. Signing up for one month is signing up for 2 classes. Months cannot be prorated.
Students will be led through the galleries examining works of art on a student level. From gallery inspiration, students will then create artwork of their own. Different media will be used each class for experimentation including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and more.
Pre-registration required one week in advance of first class.

Paint a Basketball!
Join us on Saturday, June 29th from 4-5pm to create art on your own basketball in Hickory Museum of Art’s Education Wing. Stay to meet artist Michael C. Thorpe at the EXPECTATIONS opening reception in the Coe Gallery at 5pm. Your basketball will be on display in the adjoining Objects Gallery through *November.
Come join the fun!

Father’s Day Tie Dye Fun
$40; $30 Members (Additional shirts/socks can be purchased.)
Come have a fun time with your dad tie tie-dying shirts and socks outside (weather permitting). Each dad and one child will receive one shirt and one pair of socks to Tie Dye. Additional shirts and socks may be purchased at the time of reservation. Your own shirts can be brought as well!

Come enjoy a relaxing evening learning the art of quilling. Paper Quilling is the art of cutting paper into long thin strips, rolling and pinching the pieces into different shapes, and gluing the shapes together to form decorative art. We will use a paper quilling tool and you will create your own work of art. We wio this fun workshop in the Coe Gallery on our second floor surrounded by beautiful artwork!

Earth Day (Grades K-6)

Come create a work of art out of recycled materials. We will talk about how we can intertwine art with saving the earth. All materials will be provided, but if your recycle bin is full, bring a thing or two out of it to make a creation out of. We will let our imagination soar in this fun afternoon workshop.
L.A.T.E. Night Thursday: Paint like Judy Covey

Judy Covey was an amazing local artist who would paint on wood products. After her recent passing, many of her unfinished wood products were donated to the Education Department by her family. Come enjoy a night of fun by picking out as many pieces as you desire of the donated Covey wood pieces to paint on and make your own creations. All proceeds will go towards future programming in the Education Department.
