Springtime fun: classes for all ages


Spring Break! So while school’s out let’s get creative.
Thursday, April 5th for K-2nd Grade   
Friday, April 6th for 3rd – 5th Grade
10 AM-12:30 PM (Both Days)
$20 Members | $30 Non-Members for each class.

     Registration Deadline for Both: Thursday, March 29th  

We will paint, draw, cut and collage. We’ll look for mystery items in the galleries as we go on scavenger hunts. Bring a bag lunch to enjoy outside in the garden with friends.

The Open Studio is an opportunity for artists to work with a live clothed model. This is a recurring class offered in four week blocks. Participants can draw, paint, collage, or use the printing press. The model holds the same position for three hours with several breaks. There is no instruction. All ability levels are welcome. High school students may participate in this adult studio with written parental permission.

Earth Day Art

We will celebrate Earth Day by creating art from materials typically thrown away. We'll make fish from water bottles, use CD's for turtles, bottle cap art, and more.

Mother’s Day Canvas Art at Atlanta Bread
1st Grade and Older
Saturday, May 5th | 10-11 AM.

First we’ll sketch out our flowers, then we will use acrylics to paint them in on an 8x10 canvas.

And while the children are having a good time painting those beautiful flowers, parents can enjoy a cup of coffee and the HMA artwork on the Atlanta Bread walls.

Landscape Painting and Painting Outdoors
Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16 |  4-5 PM
3rd -6th grade
$24 Members | $35 Non-Members. all three
     Registration Deadline: Friday April 27th.

We will paint mountain landscapes and seascapes, and paint outside in the HMA garden (weather permitting of course). We will try out tempera, acrylic and watercolor paints to experience how they are different.

Plein-Air Painting with Hunter Speagle
Saturday, May 26th |3-7 PM
$50 Members | $65 Non-Members
     Registration Deadline: Monday May 21

Come paint with Hickory native Hunter Speagle in a plein-air painting class (location to be determined closer to event). Students will meet at the Museum and carpool to the location. Hunter will instruct students on his loose style of painting. Simple supply list will be e-mailed to participating students. 

PLAN FOR SUMMER! Summer Camp Open House on Saturday, May 19th 1-3 PM  FREE

Come to Hickory Museum of Art to see what summer camp is all about. We’ll have several art activities to try, such as scavenger hunts in the galleries and live painting by Hunter Speagle. You’ll see the classrooms, meet some interns and pick up camp schedules if you don’t have one already. Camps are for kids ages 4-14.

A TASTE OF SUMMER: Teen Book Arts  (Ages 12-18) 
M-F August 6-10th |   3-5 PM
$60 Members | $95 Non-Members

During this interesting class, we learn how to create several shaped, non-traditional books, such as the secret room book, accordion books, and a spiral book.  We will also learn simple paper decorating techniques, including paste papers, as well as several pocket folds that can be integrated into the book structures. The finished treasures can be used for writing journal entries, poetry, travel journals, all kinds of lists, and more. Or, you may simply enjoy the folds and colors as sculptures.
