The City of Hickory hosted its fifth annual holiday season kick-off event, the Lowes Foods Christmas parade and Santa’s tree lighting, on Friday, November 16 at 6 p.m.
The entire HMA staff along with two offspring in costume took part in this parade for the first time, to bring further attention to the many and varied offerings of the museum and to highlight its 75th birthday. Fortune was with us: it was first day all week with sun rather than rain.
The staff decorated a celebratory float for the event; and dressed up in identifying tees and elf hats. We arrived downtown at 4 pm to make sure that we were ready for the 6 pm parade start.
During the actual parade, most of the staff ran alongside the float handing out over 2,000 copies of our 32 page teaching picture book Discover Folk Art: an Adventure with Artie to the many children and their adults lining the parade route. Artie himself rode with us on our float, along with a visiting dinosaur.
What an exhilarating evening we had!
